“Freebies”

Your loyal STOOGES are back with a free-for-all on pro bono . . . and more

This show’s topics fall into two categories:

FREEBIES — striking a win-win situation when friends ask for favors

and

FLASH — as a universal format, as seen in the masterful tutorials of AHARON RABINOWITZ

Once again, our show is now given a name rather than just a number. We are “all about” finding topics to address with other “one man bands” in the world of independent media creation.

"Band of One Man Bands"

Welcome to the Media Stooges Pro relaunch!

This show is our official relaunch and we start off with a bang on this one! You'll notice a new look, a new "sound" and a new identity as mentioned in the show title.

As this show is now given a name rather than just a number, we hope to convey many new ideas to you the user and media creator.

Here, Roger describes in a short audio piece just what we have been up to and some info as to the future direction of Stooges. We have thought long and hard about these decisions and are excited about the future!

So, with that... on with the show:

Band Of One Man Bands 29:13 (16.7 MB)

Band Of One Man Bands lo-fi 29:13 (4.18 MB)

Below is a full description to the show topics we will be covering in the future as well as others not listed here. Feel free to either use the comments and give us detailed ideas on what you would like to hear in each topic if you have specific ideas on these. If you would rather be a little more discreet, just check a few of the topics in the poll on the right hand side of the page...

MediaStooges Program Ideas

  • Freebies How do you handle requests to do simple projects for friends and relatives? Do them free, but not put any effort into them, thus lowering the quality of your work and therefore your reputation? Decline?
  • Motion Graphics After Effects is the king, but is it overkill? Are there smaller, cheaper programs that will do the trick? Can a lot of it be done in an NLE?
  • Building an Editing Machine What should we be sure to include? What if one program is optimized for one component and another program works best with a different one?
  • Contract and Billing A man is as good as his word. But what if you can’t remember what your words (and your client’s words, too) were? Model releases, copyright, royalties, etc.
  • Marketing Word of mouth is best, but it takes so damn long. What to do in the meantime.
  • Support Software There are millions of programs that make our jobs easier. Today, we’ll share a few of those and ask for suggestions from our listeners.
  • Selling and/or Distributing Your Product Some Video Producers sell their services, but some actually have some of their programs for sale. What’s the best way? Online? A third party. A card table in your front yard? Or at the location where the event took place. Pre-sales with a later delivery date?
  • Features and Documentaries How do you get funding? What contracts do you need? Does your state have a Film Office? Special Incentives? What does Securities and Exchange say about how you raise money? Shares?
  • Big Projects or Many Small Projects How do you work best? Nickles and dimes or the big payoff?
  • Assistants Should you hire people? How much should you pay them? Are there stands and holders and devices that would pay for themselves quickly if you weren’t paying an assistant?
  • Homemade or Pro Does the equipment you take on a job say a lot about how serious you are about your job? Do you really save a lot of money making your tripod out of crutches and duct tape?
  • Stills and Photoshop Video by definition is usually a moving image. Can you make stills a part of titles or even the content of your piece? Does Photoshop or your favorite image editing software have capabilities that enhance your video work?

Show 012 for September 22

In this installment, Jay, John and Roger take on the topic of balance as it applies to the forces of technical expertise versus artistic originality. Do film festival entries work as a suitable gauge of this? Is the up and coming generation of video artists better off with their computer fluency? Can any music live up to the inspired era of progressive rock? Find out what the Stooges think . . . and send in your thoughts to feedback@MediaStoogesPro.com
